This page is for seeds I started sowing March 2020, listed in alphabetical order. A few things left from last year's sowing I have put on Seeds 2019 / 2020. (I've already lost track of the first sowings as I write this on April 6th, I know I sowed a few things already but not sure which date so I'm making the first date April 3rd but there were some things sown in March which I've noted.) The Chiltern Seeds packets don't have any photos on them.
There are at least 2 packets of seeds I can't find. So will need to have a good look for them if I'm going to get them sown this year. - update - I found the seeds! I've inserted them below
Agastache
I found some seed heads so ended up sowing the seed, not knowing if the seeds were viable or not. They were.
29-5-2020
Borage
I am adding this although I did not sow seeds but found they germinated all by themselves while I was attempting to tidy up the pots
I potted them up separately but as usual I made a dog's dinner of it so I hope I didn't damage the roots too much
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) Franchi 3-4-2020 half the packet of seeds in 7 small pots
I have 2 trays of the nepeta seedlings. I guess the 2nd one I sowed the seeds later but poor germination.
second tray of nepeta cataria, I don't think the compost was the best for seeds
22-5-2020 I repotted the largest 7 plants (one not in photo) of the first seed tray and 1 of the original 8 wasn't large enough yet
Chinese Meadow Rue (Thalictrum delavayi) Chiltern Seeds, 4 seeds per 4 small pots 4-4-2020
the 4 pots on the right should be thalictrum but so far only 1 seedling
Cornflower Blue Ball, Mr Fothergill's, sowed 8-4-2020 in 1 of the 10 black pots shown below
today (8-4-2020) I planted up these 10 black pots, as noted with each type of seed I used, inc the cornflower above
the pot of cornflower seedlings is doing well although the squirrel has had a go a couple of times so I repotted yesterday (photo to follow)
I repotted some of the seedlings but some it was too difficult to move them
that pot on the right above was looking good but in trying to get more room in the garden, I shared it with a neighbour on Nextdoor, the others I planted in various places
Echium Blue Bedder Mr Fothergill's, 3-4-2020
a reasonable number of seedlings so far (16-4-2020)
a bit crowded but those 6 pots have the echium Blue Bedder seedlings, I also put some in a pot for next door
more echium Blue Bedder seedlings in this trough
Fox-and-Cubs, Chiltern Seeds, sowed 8-4-2020 in 1 of the 10 black pots
no germination
Green Wizard (Rudbeckia occidentalis), Chiltern Seeds, sowed 8-4-2020 in 1 of 10 black pots
no germination
Korean Aster, Danong (Korea), sowed half-packet I had left 8-4-2020 in 1 of 10 black pots
24-4-2020 1 seedling (see pot under Scabiosa Ebony and Ivory), the only seedling from the seeds I bought in Seoul Oct 2017!) - update - no it turned out to be something else 26-4-2020
no germination but the seeds were a bit old
Korean Pulsatilla, Aramseed (Korea) sowed half-packet I had left 8-4-2020 in 1 of 10 black pots
no germination but the seeds were a bit old
Lupin, Mr Fothergill's, sowed 23-5-2020
This was just about the last seed packet I have left and I wanted to have a complete clear-out (and I love lupins) so sowed them yesterday. They won't bloom until next year - if they survive that long - they are a real slug favourite.
Melancholy Thistle, Chiltern Seeds, sowed 8-4-2020 in 1 of the 10 black pots
Nemophila, 3 kinds, must have read about them, I can't remember but I have 3 seed packets from Chiltern Seeds, sowed 9-4-2020 in black pots:
Nemophila menziesii "Penny Black" Baby Eyes
6 seedlings as of 7-5-2020
7-6-2020
Nemophila menziesii var. atomaria "Snowstorm"
about 10 seedlings as of 7-5-2020
the squirrel dug this pot up but I managed to rescue a few seedlings
7-6-2020
Nemopila maculata Five Spot, Baby Eyes
I don't know why this has such widely varying germination, 7-5-2020 I had to thin out the seedlings, probably still too crowded but I'll see how they do
24-5-2020 I'm hoping they can stay and bloom in this pots
7-6-2020
Pansy Beaconsfield Mr Fothergill's, around the edge of a large black pot 4-4-2020, this is the other half of the packet from last year
no germination but seeds were a bit old
Purple Toadflax, Chiltern Seeds, sowed 8-4-2020 in 1 of the 10 black pots
no germination
Ranunculus and Anemone corms, Sainsbury's and Peter Nyssen
I started these I think 8-3-2020, I was already to empty the pots yesterday (7-4-2020) and see why they weren't growing when I noticed some shoots
I have 4 more pots with no shoots
as of 8-5-2020 there's is a trough, large pot and a couple of small pots of the anemone and ranunculus
I've had some oozing rotten anemone corms. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I guess one thing to try would be a lot of drainage, like putting the corms on gravel or grit.
another anemone bud below on the right
Rocket, Franchi, sowed quarter packet 8-4-2020 in 1 of 10 black pots, shared that pot and the rest of the seed packet, good germination but just didn't have room for it so gave the pot away and the rest of the seeds
Rose of Sharon, Aramseed (Korea), sowed half-packet I had left 8-4-2020 in 1 of 10 black pots
no germination
Sage (Salvia officinalis) Franchi, 5-4-2020
sowed in 8 small pots 26-4-2020
9-5-2020 a number of seedlings but quite different so not sure which are the sage seedlings and wha
1-6-2020 I don't understand how the sage seedlings appear to be in the orange pots even though I noted they were in black pots.
4 Sainsbury's mixed seed packs, started 8-3-2020 (I think!)
butterfly garden
as noted on the box below, includes zinnia, mallow, tickseed, corn marigold and Californina poppy
seedlings as of 7-4-2020
as of 15-4-2020
I planted this tray of seedlings in the flowerbed, just basically laid it on top, 23-4-2020
9-5-2020 savagely eaten by slugs so not sure many left, I shouldn't have planted them out so early (if at all) but had too many seed trays to manage
bee attracting garden
as noted on the box below, starflower, cornflower, dill, marigold, lace phacelia
seedlings as of 7-4-2020
as of 15-4-2020
I planted the seedlings in these two troughs, the top one has a monarda and the relics of some tulips, 21-4-2020
9-5-2020 savagely eaten by slugs so not sure many left, I shouldn't have planted them out so early (if at all) but had too many seed trays to manage
Meadow Garden
as noted on the box below, cosmos, sunflower, nigella, poppy, black millet
seedlings as of 7-4-2020
a week later, 15-4-2020
I planted the seedlings in these two troughs, 23-4-2020
Edible Flower Garden
as noted on the box below, nasturtium, viola, calendula, marigold, hyssop
seedlings as of 7-4-2020
a week later 15-4-2020, looks mostly like calendula
as of 21-4-2020, the edible seedlings, top right are the least lush of the seed trays and seems to be mostly just the calendula but I'll plant them out as well
the edible flowers appear to be mostly cornflower and calendula
Scabiosa Ebony and Ivory, Thompson and Morgan
this was a replacement packet of seeds for a packet that did not germinate well, I wasn't going to bother with them, they were all "ivory" when I preferred the "ebony", but then I thought if even 1 bee enjoys 1 flower, it will be worth it
sowed 8-4-2020 in 1 of the 10 black pots
all my seedlings in the black pots as of 24-4-2020, the scabiosa Ebony and Ivory are top left, if they all survive 6 plants from a packet of seeds is ok (top right will check, bottom left fox-and-cubs 3 seedlings, bottom right Korean aster)
I had another look at those pots and the seedlings are all the same except the drumstick scabious. I don't know how exactly this happened and not sure what exactly they are. I could say the ebony and ivory scabious, if only because there are more seedlings in that labelled pot but I guess I need to see how they develop.
the squirrels had a go at those 13 seedlings above so I only ended up with 6 below
well this is embarrassing, those are charlock I think or some brassica, that explains why they were in different pots
so Scabiosa Ebony and Ivory no germination
Scabiosa stellata "Sternkugel", Drumstick Scabious, Chiltern Seeds, sowed 9-4-2020 in one of the 15 black pots
close-up of the pot top row middle above, I am pleased with this, 6 seedlings, if all are viable that's a good result from a packet of seeds (for me! - so often I get so few)
I was so happy with the drumstick scabious, 27-4-2020 and then the squirrel got to them, I was heartbroken
I repotted some of the drumstick scabious seedlings that I could try to salvage (on the right are some seedlings I don't know but await further development)
down to 8 drumstick scabious seedlings remaining, upper left is a meadow cranesbill seedling
a few days later, I can see I really only have 5 drumstick scabious seedlings that look ok, 2 look quite poorly and 1 isn't drumstick scabious, maybe cornflower?
27-5-2020 I repotted the largest drumstick scabious, I have no place to put anything! so they are on top of the marsh mallow (sown last year) which is living in this pot
they were looking so promising above but now they look terrible, of the 4 pots only top right looks "ok", the rest have withered, especially the two pots to the left (above and to the right of the nepeta)
Self-Heal (Prunella vulgaris) Chiltern Seeds, centre of the large black pot with the pansy, 4-4-2020, this is the other half of the packet from last year (or the year before??) end of May 2020 no germination
Sheep's-Bit (Jasione montana), Chiltern Seeds, sowed 9-4-2020 in one of the 15 black pots
8-5-2020 some tiny tiny seedlings, difficult to see in a photo
end of May tried to re-pot onto better compost but not very successful, I need to try again next year in better compost
I'm not sure which seedlings these are, I can't read the label, unlike some pots where there are obviously different seedlings, these do all look the same so I presume it is something I planted so will just have to wait and see
I also don't know what these are, obviously something I planted but I wouldn't have used different pots (some orange and some black) so intrigued and there's nothing to do but wait
end of May I think they may be the salvia but why in those pots???
the pot on the right has misc seedlings (I can see poppies, not sure what else yet), on the left is a sea holly from last year?, a foxglove on the left and wild basil in the middle? I don't want the wild basil but will wait until it's more definitive before removing it
so what did I plant in these pots?? there is very little common to all the pots except the usual self-seeders such as poppy, deadnettle and verbena bonariensis
